Technology Annotated Standards

The Internet can be a powerful tool for teaching and learning at all grade levels, but it needs to be tied to grade level Curriculum Standards. Planning for the effective use of the Internet in units and lessons can be a difficult, time consuming task. When faced with the task of finding good standards-based Internet lessons or activities for the next unit, most teachers don't have time to do a good job, so the available technology is under utilized.

Almost all subjects have a number of great sources for Internet based curriculum that very meet grade level curriculum standards. However, most of the sources are not indexed by standards, so it takes quite a lot of searching to find activities to match a specific standard.

There is a way to make the task of matching Internet based activities to standards based units easier. The first step is to copy all of the course standards and sub-standards to a word processing document. Next, begin to search a single source of Internet based curriculum materials for activities that match any of the standards for your course. When you find an activity that fits a standard, record under the appropriate standard / substandard in your word processing document.

When you record the activity it is important to enter the following information:

- The Title of the Activity.
- The URL where the activity is found.
- A brief description of the activity to include the type of activity / resource and how it might be used.

Continue to mine this source for all of the usable contents. Once you have finished, move on to another source and repeat the process. As you repeat these steps you begin to build a set of Technology Annotated Standards
